SOUND:FRAME 2011

In 2011, the sound:frame festival will celebrate its fifth birthday, and will deal with the core theme perFORMance theoretically and artistically. For a long time, visual implementations were mostly observed through formal and aesthetic aspects. sound:frame wants to put an emphasis on the process-like character of live performances, and address the real-time development of content and form.

In visual arts, "performance" has been discussed for a couple of years now. Based on a general discourse of performances, sound:frame tries to investigate the development of performative approaches in audio:visual art and shows an interest in different approaches to making electronic music performances and the process-like nature of visualization.

In both music and visual media, formally aesthetic parameters evolve steadily. The examination's point of focus is the attempt to bring two different ways of approaching visualization face to face - mixing of video-content on the one hand and programming of live generated visuals on the other. What are the consequences of the approach for the respective live performance? Is a computer an actual instrument or does it solely function as a tool? Why is it important to distinguish between a DJ and an audio live act?

Which influence these developments have on the interplay of sound and visual media will continue be the most important question. What's the difference between the improvised interaction of musician and visualist and the collaboratively acquired AV-act?

In 2011, the sound:frame program will again offer space for both improvised performances and custom-designed AV-concepts.

Like during last year's festival theme "dimensions", space is once again a very important aspect in 2011. Spatial FORMs are occupied performatively, spatial sculptures are designed as extraordinary projection surfaces, while at the same time functioning as a platform and hosting live performances. There will be real time audio:visual performances on these installations.

SOUND:FRAME OPENING

The sound:frame festival 2011 OPENING will be taking place at the Ottakringer Brewery, featuring an extensive line-up of audio:visual live bands, electronic live acts and live visuals as well as DJ and VJ lines.

The brewery's largest room "Alte Technik" will become an exhibition space. During the exhibition opening on March 25th at 8:00 PM, there will be experimental, audio:visual live performances and installations. Among those you will find a work of Ryoichi Kurokawa, as well as a commissioned piece by depart (world premiere!) and other special highlights.

Afterwards, three further floors of the Ottakringer Brewery will host the audio:visual live program that will continue throughout the whole weekend, featuring a broad array of genres like poststep, hiphop, house and techno. We're very happy to announce that there will be a couple of Austrian premieres. Lindstrøm, Pariah, Pangaea and Teebs will perform in Austria for the very first time in the course of sound:frame 2011. The sound:frame AV visualist team will design an immersive visual concept for another floor called "Hefeboden" that different solo artists out of the team will perform on. As usual, the remaining two floors will host special spatial concepts designed and realised by visualist teams.

SCREENINGS, AUDIO:VISUAL LIVE PERFORMANCES & TALKS

The two following weekends, sound:frame will perform at different venues all over Vienna. In a cooperation with the film-museum and the Vienna Film Fund, we will show a profile of audio:visual art history. Two screenings, an audio:visual live performance and talks will commence the sound:frame public discussions that will be continued at Kunsthalle project space the day after. An international cast will once again discuss recent approaches to audio:visual and intercreative art forms, focusing on the festival theme perFORMance.

SOUND:FRAME CLOSING

The festival's last weekend brings another one of sound:frames highlights. We will invite the audience to the "Rinderhallen" to show monumental and gripping implementations. The audio:visual installation and live performance ATOM by Robert Henke (Monolake) and Christopher Bauer will show a spectacle of a kind to be seen only very rarely in Vienna. Media Quarter Marx, located not far from the Rinderhallen, will house a variety of different workshops during the day.

The closing of sound:frame 2011 will take place at Fluc, featuring live performances by Dave Aju, Ogris Debris and countless visualists and musicians on both floors.

Naturally, there will be a ton of other treats, like the infamous sound:frame party tram.

We're looking forward to a diversified audio:visual perFORMance program and we'll be back with more details shortly!

Yours truly,
the sound:frame team!
